About Us

History:

1950- Rev. Kenneth Mendenhall purchased a portion of property in Peoria, AZ intending to found a Bible school for American Indians.

1952- Rev. Mendenhall invited the National Holiness Missionary Society (now World Gospel Mission) to assume control of the school.

1950's- The school went under reorganization and became the Southwest Indian Training School and soon became known as the Southwest Indian School in 1957.

1970's-1980's- Workers began to branch out into reservation ministries. Rick & Kathy Nixon and Carol Cochran started ministering to the Navajo reservation. The Neighborhood Club is one of the ministries that has come from our ministry with the Navajos.

1987- Erwin & Naomi Patricio left their positions on staff at the Southwest Indian School to head back home to the Tohono O'odham reservation and started a church in the village of Choulic. Missionaries were sent to Sells, Arizona to assist in the work with the Patricios. Living Word Academy, a day school, is one of the ministries that has come from our ministry with the Patricios.

1998- Southwest Indian School closed its doors as a boarding school.

2000- After a period of reorganization, the campus of Southwest Indian School was renamed the Southwest Indian Ministries Center and began to use the campus as a summer camping program and retreat center.
